The Government through the Department of National Planning and Monitoring and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement on Extension of Project for Rehabilitation of Alotau Market and Fisheries Facilities.
The signing was done between Koney Samuel, Secretary for the Department of National Planning and Monitoring and Masato Koinuma, JICA Chief Representative to PNG.
The JICA funded Alotau market and fisheries facility has already been completed and is in use. However, this grant extension is to provide for training for capacity building on market management.
"JICA has really demonstrated success by delivering a state of art market facility. It's a privilege having JICA’s support not only with providing the basic market infrastructure but also on the soft component to provide trainings and build the human capacity for the proper management of markets," Secretary Samuel said.
The Government through DNPM is embarking on rolling out Provincial and District markets and fish facilities to support local farmers and fishermen to boost economic activities at the provincial and district level throughout PNG.
"I once again thank JICA for this great initiative to support Milne Bay Provincial Administration and my Department look forward for further collaboration," Mr Samuel said.
