Papua New Guinea gained Independence on September 16, 1975. The Head of the State is His Majesty, King Charles III, represented by a Governor-General, elected by the Parliament. The government is based on the Westminster parliamentary democracy and has an elected Prime Minister.
Papua New Guinea has a single Constitution and a House of Representatives made up of 118 Members of the Parliament – 96 Members of open electorates and 22 provincial Governors.
