Papua New Guinea is a mid-sized country among small island countries of the Pacific Ocean Islands in Oceania. It comprises the eastern half of the world's third great island, New Guinea and its 600-plus offshore islands and atolls in the sub-group of Melanesia. Port Moresby, its capital is located along its south-eastern coast. The country has a total land area of 462,840 km2. Lying just south of the equator and 160 kilometres north of Australia, Papua New Guinea is part of a great arc of tropical mountains stretching from Asia, through Indonesia and into the South Pacific.
